NOTAMs are incorrect

Hello everyone!

I’d just like to let you know that you shouldn’t rely on the NOTAMs in VFRnav, but it’s better to always use aviation-approved channels. I already pointed out to Hermann repeatedly last year that the NOTAMs in VFRnav are incorrect. But presumably they can’t get it any better. For example, today, on a Sunday, our military CTR is active, which is rather unusual. It would be foolish, for instance, to fly in there unannounced because it’s not displayed in VFRnav.

I’ve attached two screenshots. One official from Austrocontrol and one from VFRnav.

Hello Wauki,

this has nothing to do with VFRnav, but rather with Austro Control and the distribution of military NOTAMs in Austria.
These military details are not shared with all international partners (possibly for security reasons), but only with selected organisations.

Ultimately, however, you’re viewing the situation a bit ‘back to front’, because:

As a general rule in European airspace:
When in doubt, airspace is active.
Therefore, it is correct that the CTR for LOXT is shown – and one must assume that it is active.

When a CTR is not active, corresponding NOTAMs are often (though not always) published.
In all other cases, the Flight Information Service (FIS) is the first and only legally reliable source for all airspace users.

That Austro Control offers a local, additional communication channel for LOXT can be seen as a friendly service in Austria – but it does not conform to the standard European regulation.

Aviator’s greeting,

Hermann
