[Release] VFRnav 4.16

:small_airplane: VFRnav Update – Version 4.16.0 Released! :tada:

With version 4.16.0, VFRnav introduces major improvements in Weight & Balance, external device connectivity, and map display.

:balance_scale: Weight & Balance

  • Improved user experience for aircraft-related settings
  • Faster aircraft selection in flight planning
  • New Weight & Balance settings available in the aircraft configuration
  • In the flight planning, you can now perform a mass & balance calculation
    • Results are also shown in a mass & balance diagram
  • The calculation is additionally included in the PIB (Pre-Flight Information Bulletin)

:satellite_antenna: External Device Connectivity

  • Optimized handling of external sources for position and traffic data
    • For TCP connections, VFRnav now tries to automatically determine the source IP address
  • New: Support for Lilygo T-Echo (SoftRF) via Bluetooth LE

:world_map: Map Display

  • During flight, the map now automatically scrolls back to the current position after 15 seconds of inactivity, reducing manual interaction
  • Traffic symbols are now color-coded based on threat level

:hammer_and_wrench: Bug Fixes

  • Fix: Attitude data from NMEA sources were not processed correctly

:airplane: With this release, VFRnav becomes even more powerful for flight preparation and safer during your flights.

:light_bulb: We are especially excited about the new Weight & Balance functionality and look forward to your ideas and suggestions for improvements.

Blue skies and safe flying! :airplane:
– Your VFRnav Team

Wow… now the releases are coming thick and fast… I’ll try out the new feature over the weekend and report back.

Many thanks to the VFRnav Team

Many, many thanks!

VFRnav has quietly and stealthily become the best software for pilots. It’s really great to be part of it.

Keep it up!

Immediately after the update, I tried the Weight & Balance. It really works flawlessly. Also, the ability to add extra arms provides full functionality.

Really great to preconfigure it and then customise it individually for each flight.

Very, very good!! Thank you very much!

Best regards

Victor

Hello everyone,

I second that:

Many thanks for the update and of course for the great development. I’m not very tech-savvy, I admit. But vfrnav makes it super easy for me.

A question from me for that reason as well: exactly what data do I need to enter in the W&B settings? Unfortunately I’ve somewhat neglected the W&B aspect. But my flight instructor always told me that at my flying weight it’s always okay :see_no_evil_monkey:.

However, I’d now like to familiarise myself more with the topic.

I’m flying (at the club) a C42, B variant.

Many, many thanks!

Are you still in training?

I find your flight instructor’s statement absolutely wrong and I completely disagree with him on all points. Weight & Balance (W&B) is a very, very important aspect of flying, if not one of the most important.
I can’t understand how anyone can give student pilots such information. As soon as passengers are involved or there is a change of aircraft, this no longer

Actually you only need the centre of gravity positions and the maximum weight from the flight manual, and the empty weight as well as the empty centre of gravity from the weighing report.

These data go into the “Centre of Gravity Range” settings.

Next are the levers. You’ll also find those in the manual.

It’s all pretty straightforward with ultralights. Just watch out for the units—the lever arms are sometimes given in cm or m, so you’ll need to convert them to mm.

Sorry, typed on my phone :man_facepalming:

Yes, I’m still in training. I haven’t had many flight hours yet, and I’m focusing on the theory exam first. But in the meantime, I read a lot and already plan my flights on the ground

Hello, I’ve just tried that straight away as well. But maybe I’m overlooking something? I can preconfigure W

I’ve found it: in the flight planning, click/tap on the registration at the top.

I’ve already tested the new feature and have two suggestions for improvement.

  1. W & B should also display a warning when the maximum gross weight and/or the permissible centre-of-gravity limits are exceeded. I tested this and although it shows me the (excess) total weight, there’s no warning. It only says “Total weight 612 kg”, but not “Warning” or anything similar. Something should flash red ;-

Hi,

the German microlight regulations requires that you can not exceed the allowed CG range, as long as you are within the min/max weight limits. Therefore the instructor advise is ok.

What exactly was fixed in 4.16.2? Unfortunately, there’s no information about it in the Play Store.

In 4.16, a bug in support for Lilygo/SoftRF devices was discovered after release. This was fixed in 4.16.2.

Hello everyone,

Thank you for the abundant feedback here and by e-mail regarding the Weight & Balance function.

In the upcoming version, we have implemented the following improvements:

  1. Alert messages for overloading or exceeding centre of gravity limits
  2. A visual indicator when mass/centre of gravity is outside the diagram
  3. Display of safe flight time based on the fuel quantity entered

Truly remarkable how this is evolving. Full respect. I was able to enter the data from weighing and the manual without any issues. It’s a great feeling to have the data included in the PIB as print. That reminds me: perhaps the limits should also be listed in the PIB. Or a short text along the lines of “Weight and balance are within limits.” or so.

VFRnav has quietly and stealthily developed into the best software for pilots. Really great to be part of it.

Definitely!!! Everything is really, really charming. Here, it’s performance that scores points, not some paid articles in aviation magazines or from YouTube stars.

Best regards

Thank you very much for the suggestion. That will be implemented exactly like that in the next version. :ok_hand:

W&B is great! Many thanks for the fantastic software!

After having invested some work in configuring the aircraft, an import/export feature for the aircraft database would, of course, be welcome. I’m submitting a feature request for it
