VFRnav offers the option to colour the terrain on the map according to the current altitude.
Terrain areas in the surrounding area that are at the same height or above will be highlighted:

Yellow: Terrain in immediate proximity to the current altitude

Red: Terrain above the current altitude or with very little vertical separation
This gives the pilot a visual assessment at a glance of the terrain proximity and the topographic situation along the flight path. This particularly increases situational awareness in mountainous terrain and under reduced visibility conditions.
Note:
The colouring does not replace an obstacle or terrain warning system. It is intended solely for situational assistance and does not relieve the obligation to maintain continuous observation of the airspace.
