I’ve been using VFRnav for several years and am extremely satisfied with the value for money and the regular updates!
I think I’ve found a cost-effective ADS-B IN receiver with the “uAvionix pingUSB”. However, before purchasing I want to make sure that it is also compatible with VFRnav.
According to the datasheet, it supports GDL 90 over WiFi. Are there any experiences with this device in conjunction with VFRnav or even an official statement on compatibility with VFRnav?
I received the uAvionix pingUSB today. I was able to pair it with VFRNav over Wi-Fi without any problems or additional configuration! Great stuff!
About the device itself: rather “thin” plastic housing. Micro USB-B connector, not exactly state-of-the-art? It was already quite warm after just 10 minutes of operation (in the living room). Hopefully that won’t be an issue in the cockpit during summer…
Occasionally aircraft at a distance of 3003 NM are displayed. Probably a reception error due to testing in the living room…
…thank you very much for the feedback. Please also report from practical experience. Heat: it may be that this is perfectly normal. The SDRs (e.g. from Nooelec) require a fairly high operating temperature to function correctly. What is built into the ping’s???
At 192.168.4.1 there is a minimalist web interface with only two options: “Wi-Fi Version” update and “ADS-B Version” update. No other configuration options are visible. The enclosure is marked with FCC ID: 2AHMR-ESP12S. I can’t open it because it uses micro-Torx screws, which I don’t have. (And I’m not even sure I want to… :)).
